The longer I journey down life's road, the more convinced I become that most people can handle a major crisis.
When tragedy strikes, something remarkable often happens. We find strength we did not know we possessed. We gather our courage. We pray harder. Family and friends rally around us. Adrenaline carries us through.
We do what we have to do.
But what often brings us to our knees is not one major event.
It is the accumulation of many smaller things.
A doctor's appointment.
A sleepless night.
An unexpected bill.
A difficult conversation.
A discouraging phone call.
A family concern.
A repair that needs made.
A relationship under strain.
A disappointment we did not see coming.
None of these things by themselves seem overwhelming.
Yet when they arrive one after another, day after day, week after week, they begin to weigh heavily upon our hearts.
Before long, we find ourselves exhausted.
Not because of one giant burden.
But because of a hundred smaller ones.
Perhaps that is where you find yourself today.
You are still standing.
You are still moving forward.
You are still showing up.
But if you are honest, you are tired.
Very tired.
The prophet Elijah understood this feeling.
After one of the greatest victories of his life on Mount Carmel, he found himself emotionally, physically, and spiritually depleted.
The battle had been won.
The miracle had happened.
Yet afterward he was exhausted and discouraged.
Sometimes the challenge is not surviving the storm.
Sometimes the challenge is recovering from all the energy it took to survive it.
One of the enemy's favorite tactics is not necessarily to destroy us through one overwhelming attack.
Often he simply tries to wear us down.
A little worry here.
A little fear there.
A little discouragement tomorrow.
A little frustration the next day.
Eventually the weight becomes significant.
That is why Jesus issued this invitation:
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28)
Notice that Jesus did not say, "Come to me only when the crisis is huge."
He said come when you are weary.
Weariness often develops gradually.
It comes from carrying loads that were never meant to be carried alone.
The truth is that many of us have become experts at carrying burdens while forgetting how to surrender them.
We keep piling responsibilities onto already weary shoulders.
We keep convincing ourselves that we can manage just one more thing.
Until one day we discover we cannot.
That is when God's grace becomes so precious.
God does not merely strengthen us for the big moments.
He sustains us through the countless small moments that make up everyday life.
He gives peace for the appointment.
Strength for the conversation.
Wisdom for the decision.
Comfort for the disappointment.
Hope for tomorrow.
His grace is not reserved for dramatic emergencies.
It is available for ordinary Tuesdays.
For waiting rooms.
For sleepless nights.
For difficult phone calls.
For long weeks.
For weary hearts.
Maybe today you are carrying a burden that no one else can see.
Maybe nothing is dramatically wrong.
Maybe it is simply that life has been piling up.
If so, remember this:
God sees every burden.
God knows every concern.
God understands every struggle.
And He invites you to bring every one of them to Him.
Not just the big things.
The small things too.
Because eventually the small things become big things.
And the God who cares about eternity also cares about what is weighing on your heart today.
What small burdens have I been carrying that I need to place into God's hands?
Father, sometimes it is not one major problem that overwhelms me, but the accumulation of many smaller burdens. Thank You for caring about every detail of my life. Help me stop carrying things You never intended me to carry alone. Teach me to bring every concern, every worry, and every burden to You. Renew my strength, refresh my spirit, and remind me that Your grace is sufficient for today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
The weight that is exhausting you today may not be one large burden—it may be many small burdens God is inviting you to surrender to Him one at a time.
